Conexant Launches Family of Highly Integrated VoIP Solutions for Enterprise and Consumer Phone Applications; Single-Chip, Feature-Rich IP 'Phone-on-a-Chip' Delivers Cost and Performance Benefits
NEWPORT BEACH, Calif.—(BUSINESS WIRE)—Sept. 6, 2005—
Conexant Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ:CNXT), a worldwide
leader in semiconductor solutions for broadband communications,
enterprise networks and the digital home, today announced the first in
a family of integrated voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) phone
solutions. The single-chip CX90600 system solution targets IP- and
Web-based desktop phone terminals for business and residential
applications. VoIP is a packet-based technology that allows users to
make phone calls over the Internet instead of using the standard
public switched telephone network. The highly integrated chip reduces
bill-of-material (BOM) costs and design complexity, enabling product
developers to quickly bring cost-effective and feature-rich VoIP
terminals to market.
"The CX90600 is designed to meet the functionality and price point
that developers of enterprise and consumer desktop IP telephony
products require," said Zeev Collin, vice president of Voice Access
Products for Conexant. "Moving forward, we will focus on delivering
modular, combination products that leverage our Wi-Fi, video and DSL
product portfolios in order to address converged voice, video,
broadband access and networking market opportunities."
Industry analyst firm IDC expects the VoIP semiconductor market to
grow from $338 million in 2004 to $1.7 billion in 2008. Market drivers
include increased VoIP functionality in DSL and cable modem customer
premise equipment, and increased demand for IP phones and PBXs.
The flexible architecture of the CX90600 allows manufacturers to
use a common design to support a wide range of application options
including Web browsing, Wi-Fi billing, and video conferencing. The
chip is based on the ARM926EJ core and includes a rich set of
peripheral interfaces that enable connectivity to smart cards, flash
drives, video cameras and 802.11 a/g wireless LANs. Integrated
interfaces include a three-port Ethernet switch to enable local and
wide area network connections, a universal serial bus (USB) 2.0
controller, a high-performance peripheral component interconnect (PCI)
2.3 interface, a high-speed universal asynchronous receive/transmitter
(UART), a keypad interface, a FXO interface, a FlexIO interface, and
several general purpose I/Os.
Advanced voice features support a wide variety of low bit rate and
wideband speech coding schemes including G.711, G.722, G.726 and
G.729ab, as well as dual-tone multi-frequency (DTMF) and dial tone
detection/generation telephony algorithms without the need for an
external digital signal processing (DSP) device. The CX90600 also
provides acoustic echo cancellation capability for high-quality voice
transmissions and full-duplex speakerphone.
In addition, the CX90600 features an integrated memory management
unit (MMU), a high-resolution liquid crystal display (LCD) controller,
caches, tightly coupled memory (TCM), and an analog codec allowing for
a single-chip IP phone design.
Conexant has a long history in voice band processing, and holds an
extensive intellectual property portfolio in voice processing and
coding technology. The company's field-proven voice technology has
enabled more than 100 million voice/data modems, and has been
incorporated in millions of voice ports and wireless cellular
telephones. The company's VoIP products include voice coprocessors and
codecs to enable the easy addition of voice to networked devices,
complete system solutions including network processors, and a suite of
application software and reference designs.
Availability, Packaging and Pricing
Samples of the CX90600 are available now, with production
quantities scheduled for November. The device is packaged in a 324-pin
flat pack ball grid array (FPBGA), and priced at $15.00 in quantities
of 10,000.
